The Cyclones love playing at Lafayette Square. In front of a rather large crowd for 95 degrees and 85% or so humidity the Cyclone BBC hosted the Clarkes. Both games were marked with great defense all around and tallies were at a premium all day. The Cyclone club managed a 6-3 win over the visitors in the first match. The low score in the first match was just a picture of what was to come. In the second match of the day, “Newt” of the Clarkes managed to 4 hit the Cyclones over the 7 inning affair. Three of those came in the 3rd where the Cyclones scored their lone run. Chuckwagon also hurled a great game, with only three Clarkes tallying aces also in the 3rd. Much of the rest of the game was short innings, which was somewhat welcome considering the rising temperatures.

Three clubs meet at Jefferson Barracks

The St. Louis Unions hosted the Cyclone 9 and the Indiana Hoosier 9 in a three team round robin on Jun 25th. The Cyclones found there bats and were able to reach base 20 times through 9 innings, but only 5 crossed the plate giving the Hoosiers a 20-5 victory in the first match. The Unions then took their turn and beat the Cyclone 10-1, with Shutterbug scoring the lone tally.

Barclay Festival a success!!!

Over the weekend of June 4th and 5th, the Cyclone BBC participated in the Barclay Festival at beautiful Lafayette Square Park. Good times were had by all over the course a wonderful weekend. The Cyclone club did not manage a win all weekend as they struggled to find their bats in the first two matches of the festival. The Minnesota club defeated the home team 10-4 in the first match of the day, mostly in the 5th frame where the visitors managed 6 aces. In the second match of the day, the St. Louis Perfectos handily beat the Cyclone Club 11-1. Bookworm was the lone Cyclone to make the rounds and tally an ace.

On Sunday, striking was marginally better, but the Cyclones fell twice more. Opening the day, the Murphysboro Clarkes beat the hosts 13-8. The Perfectos again put an a striking demonstration in the afternoon match, winning 12-6 in the final match of the weekend.

21 – May 2011 – The Cyclone BBC finely beat the weather on May 21st and was able to play against the St. Louis Brown Stockings. Unfortunately, they were beat by the Brown Stockings instead. The rust from a long winter was evident as the Stockings put up 8 aces in the top of the first frame. The Cyclone club answered with just a single run in the bottom of the frame. From then on the Cyclone club played them square but ended up losing 14-6. In the second match of the double header, things didn’t get much better. The bats went cold on a scorching 90 degree day as the Cyclone team managed just 13 base runners during the 12-3 loss.

28 – May 2011 – The Cyclone BBC had their home opener today against the St. Louis Unions. Things started much better for the home today as they tallied an ace in the top of the first with their lead-off man making the rounds as the Cyclone club stuck. The Union club earned back single run by single run throughout the rest of the day and by the time the 7th inning came round, the Cyclone BBC was down 4-1. They managed two more aces in the top of the frame but left the tying run on the second sack and the go ahead run on first. The second match of the day turned into a defensive struggle. After 3 innings, the game was tied 1-1, after 5, same score. The teams decided to play a full 9 in hopes of generating some offense. In happened in the 6th innings when the home team batted all 10 men and tallied an additional 4 aces. The Unions tallied two more runs through the 7th and 8th, but fell short, losing in the end 6-3. The teams mingled afterwards and enjoyed some good company after two hard fought games.

Please come out and enjoy a presentation from Ed “Buffalo” Nickels and Tony “Lightning” Wicker as they present “Vintage Baseball: The Rules and Customs of 19th Century Games.” Wednesday, May 18th at 7 pm at the West County EMS & Fire Station 223Henry Ave., Manchester

There will be a game in Manchester, MO on July 30th as part of the Old Trials Historical Society program where the Cyclone BBC will play against the St. Louis Brown Stockings at 4 pm

Unions date Rescheduled

Although the rain continued to push the home Cyclone BBC home opener back, the game has been rescheduled for May 28th at Lafayette Square Park at 11 am.

Annual Fundraiser – May 7th

6 May – Join the ballists of the Cyclone club and the St. Louis Perfectos for their annual Wine Tasting fundraiser. The event is this Saturday, May 7th, from 12-3 at the 33 Wine Bar (1913 Park Ave. ) in beautiful Lafayette Square. Tickets are $10 at the door. Raffles and door prizes also at the event.

Springfield match postponed

16 April – Due to severe weather, and a very wet field, the Cyclone match against the Springfield Long Nines has been postponed to a later date. Please check back for the date and time of the rescheduled match.

Blackburn match canceled

Do to scheduling conflicts, the exhibition match at Blackburn College has been canceled. The Cyclone BBC will play their next match against the Springfield Long Nine Club – 1 pm – Center Park in Springfield, IL.
